Wood binds large amounts of CO2 and, as a renewable building material, is a raw material of the future. The CA is an energy-plus building that can be operated in a climate-neutral and grid-positive manner thanks to the large 140 kWh PV system on the roof and battery storage. As a timber building with high recycling potential and CO2 savings, the building's construction is also practically climate neutral. »

All materials, colours and coatings are mineral and ecologically carefully selected. Daylight is used in the visitor centre and mechanical air conditioning is largely dispensed with. Here we used what nature provides us with as a microclimate on site to build a robust and therefore durable house that works with nature and not against nature. All the craft businesses that were involved in the construction of the Rapunzel World are located in the immediate vicinity of Legau (from local wood to the neighbouring gravel plant).»

Sonthofen Alpine Town Museum

Sonthofen, Alemania, 2019-2023
Andreas Ferstl Architekten
Municipality of Sonthofen

Expert committee. Architecture and Sustainability: Outstanding Qualities
The scientific committee emphasises the following points from the text provided by the architects: «_ The building illustrates the modern architectural approach of building on instead of building new. (…) Sustainability, regionality and craftsmanship are the most important design criteria on the inside. The roof of the exhibition rooms, for example, was clad in wood; the silver fir trees required for this were felled in the town's own forest. The façade and roof landscape thus not only represent a valuable contribution to modern construction in a historical setting, but also the exemplary use of renewable and regional raw materials. »

Fundación Young Living
Pablo Ponce Construcción

Expert committee. Architecture and Sustainability: Outstanding Qualities
The scientific committee underlines the following sustainable aspects from the text provided by the architects: «The project was seeking to be an integrative space for a big group of sewing women that, until then, were not able to develop their productive activities in a proper space that could express their identity and desires in a sustainable way. Local bricks were used, presenting a herringbone pattern which are stiffened by the very shape of the interlocked walls. Patio with endemic vegetation that manages to reveal new possibilities of environmentally conscious architectures. Teak wood, traditionally used as a structure of the old stilt houses around the area, is used for the main structure. Low energetic consumption. For the natural illumination and ventilation wooden folding lattice doors are used to control them. »

Constructed 40% with teak wood reused from demolition of vernacular dwellings. Recovery of traditional trades. Erected by a Burmese carpenter specialised in the construction of vernacular houses, using Karen wood construction techniques. Passive climate control. The holes in the composite pillars allow air currents to flow from the river to the mountain. Implantation in the landscape. The church is conceived as a natural continuation of the surrounding vernacular structures and is framed by the existing vegetation. Critical reinterpretation of traditional Karen architectural motifs, using the same tools and joint systems in a contemporary language. »

Localworks

Expert committee. Architecture and Sustainability: Outstanding Qualities
The scientific committee underlines the following sustainable aspects of the architectural work: «Local and natural materials: Earthbags filled with soil from the site, raw earth, foundations built with packed local sandstone blocks, roof structure with eucalyptus wood from the trees on site, the structural slab functions as the final floor finish, ground milled to expose the natural stone aggregate. The thick, earthen external walls, stop short of the roof allowing the flow of fresh air to cool down the spaces and ventilate. Protecting school from water damage with locally sourced sandstone slates covering the lower sections of the exterior walls. Outdoor learning area shaded by trees for fresh comfort. Sunlight protection: narrow openings in the roof structure filter natural light into the classrooms, while its underside is finished with woven mats made by local craftspeople, the roof also shelter the outdoor learning spaces. »

Rwanda Institute for Conservation Agriculture (RICA)

MASS Design Group
Howard G. Buffett Foundation
Rwanda Institute for Conservation Agriculture, Government of Rwanda

Expert committee. Architecture and Sustainability: Outstanding Qualities
The scientific committee highlights that Rwanda Institute « is a carbon negative campus based on regionally sourced bio- and geo-based materials, embodied labour connected to training»; and extracts the following points from the text provided by the architects: «RICA utilizes 96% of materials (by weight) from Rwanda, a 1.5MW solar farm produces 100% of RICA’s electricity. The structural foundation uses locally-quarried quartzite stone within a 5-mile radius, reducing concrete volumes and embodied carbon by 60% compared to a typical reinforced concrete solution. Innovative engineering involved researching and testing on-site soils to create a low-cement mix for site-made Compressed Earth Blocks (CEB), rammed-earth walling, and earth plaster mixes. Roof structures utilise regionally sourced sustainable softwoods, supporting a fledgling, low-carbon industry. Considering all stages of the building process, RICA's embodied carbon is projected to be 60% less than a business-as-usual approach, resulting in a total saving of over 5000 tonnes CO2e.»
