Ciutat Vella

This itinerary explained the history of the Barceloneta neighborhood through buildings which show Barceloneta as a newly created neighborhood, as well as its ongoing development. The tour included visits to the museum Casa de la Barceloneta, which can help us understand how housing development changed over time; different private businesses built in the 50's and a recent housing development carried out by the "Patronat Municipal de l'Habitatge." The itinerary finished at the Barceloneta market, a building that was awarded the prize Ciutat de Barcelona in the category of architecture and urban development.

Sant Andreu

Tuesday, 23rd May 2017

Maximum 50 participants

In the city district of Sant Andreu we were able to see social housing development throughout the history of Barcelona: starting with the Cases Barates in Bon Pastor and the progressive relocation of its inhabitants into buildings of the Patronat Municpal d'habitatge. This was followed by a visit to a residence that offers services to senior citizens and that provides an answer to the current needs of its citizens. The last stop was at Casa Bloc, which was started in 1933 by the Generalitat de Catalunya for the working class. This residence is an example of quality architectural design.

Two facilities were visited: The incineration facility of Sant Adrià del Besòs (mechanical-biological treatment facility and biogas, electricity and heat energy facility), as well as the tire collecting plant located at the Fòrum. This is where waste is separated to be sent to different treatment plants.

The strategy of circular economy can also be applied to architectural and urbanistic concepts: if the 19th century was the century of the "eixample" and the 20th century the one of urbanistic extensions, then the 21st has to be the century of recycling. The urbanistic recycling of the cities reduces growth, reutilizing buildings that the passing of time has left abandoned or in disuse. We find some of these examples in the rehabilitation of industrial spaces like the ones that we visited on this route.
